18th century engraving of Phédre et Hippolyte" in a gilded frame.
The image depicts a scene from the French dramatic tragedy written by Jean Racine in the 1600s. Phèdre, the stepmother of Hippolyte, has just declared her love for her stepson and calls for his sword to escape his rejection. Originally printed by Jean Jacque Avrile (1744-1831) as an engraving, the play is inspired from Greek mythology and captures the essence of the Neoclassical period in France.
Frame is distressed and has a chip on left lower panel and smaller chips around the sides.
